Facilitating Plural Marriage: Eligibility, Preparation and a Responsible Process

IMB Editorial Team · 5 October 2026 · about 4 min read

IMB

Our third goal is facilitating plural marriage (Our goal: Facilitating Plural Marriage). Here "facilitating" means making it easy, not a blanket encouragement — building a Shariah-compliant, lawful and responsible path for eligible people.

The Shariah basis

Marry women of your choice — two, three or four; but if you fear that you will not be just, then one. — (Surah An-Nisa, 4:3)

The verse contains the permission, the limit and the condition — all three. Details: The Islamic ruling on multiple marriages.

Who may proceed: an eligibility checklist

If you hesitate over even one question, wait; the Qur'an's instruction is clear — if there is a fear, one.

From the woman's side: the foundation of protection

When a proposal comes as a second or third wife, the woman's rights:

  1. To know the groom's marital status and family information.
  2. To ask to see proof of legal permission.
  3. To have the mahr, housing, maintenance and time division written down (Nikahnama).
  4. Her own clear consent and the involvement of her wali (The wali).
  5. The right to say "no" — haste or pressure for secrecy is a major warning sign.

List of questions: 10 questions if you want to become a second wife.

In Bangladesh, while an existing marriage subsists, another marriage cannot be contracted without the prior written permission of the Arbitration Council; if done without it, the existing wife's full mahr is immediately payable and there is a provision for punishment. The steps: Conditions and rules of a second marriage.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Secrecy: if it causes deception and violation of rights, there is sin and legal risk (A secret second marriage).
  • A nikah without permission: registration is not possible and proving the rights of wife and children is hard.
  • Neglecting the first household: reducing maintenance and time is oppression.
  • Deciding in emotion: haste without istikhara and a scholar's advice.

IMB's role

We arrange introductions among verified applicants, mediate to bring transparency to the proposal and encourage the involvement of the woman and her wali. The marriage is completed through a public nikah and registration.

Steps of discussion with the family

Although the decision on plural marriage is personal, its effect falls on the whole family. So:

  1. First make an honest assessment of your intention and means.
  2. Take the advice of a trusted scholar.
  3. If possible, take the first wife into confidence and talk in a calm setting; listen attentively to her fears, objections and questions.
  4. Honestly follow the way the wife's opinion is involved in the legal process.
  5. Have the necessary discussion with the children and parents.

A small account of financial preparation

Write down separately for each household:

  • Monthly rent / housing cost
  • Food, clothing and daily expenses
  • Medical care and an emergency fund
  • The children's education
  • The outstanding portion of the mahr

Check whether the total stays within your lawful income and whether any household's minimum needs would have to be cut — if the second, the preparation is not yet done (Maintenance and housing).

Emotional security of women and children

Not only money — time and respect are also part of justice. Keeping the first wife's dignity, giving the new wife shelter and security, and not criticising either side in front of the children are the foundation of sustaining the household (Handling co-wife jealousy).

When waiting is wise

  • Financial means or separate housing are not assured.
  • There is competition, revenge or an emotional urge in the intention.
  • You feel like avoiding the legal process.
  • You lack confidence in upholding justice.

In these cases the Qur'an's instruction is clear: if there is a fear of injustice, one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you do in terms of facilitating plural marriage?

We verify eligible applicants who wish to proceed in a Shariah-compliant and lawful way, arrange introductions and help ensure transparency about mahr, housing and maintenance in the proposal. We do not encourage secret or unlawful marriages.

Is the first wife's permission necessary for a second marriage?

It is not a Shariah condition for the marriage to take place, but in Bangladesh the Arbitration Council's written permission is required; protecting the wife's rights and dignity is a moral duty.

What if one cannot uphold justice?

The Qur'an's instruction is one. Refraining from plural marriage because of this fear is the Shariah path.
