Maintenance and Housing for Multiple Wives: Practical Planning and Shariah Principles
IMB Editorial Team · 5 October 2026 · about 5 min read
One of the most practical questions about plural marriage is cost. If one marries out of emotion or religious zeal and then a crisis arises over maintenance and housing, it causes hardship for wives and children alike. Shariah has therefore put responsibility in front.
Maintenance: the Shariah principle
Let the man of ample means spend according to his means; and the one whose provision is limited, let him spend from what Allah has given him. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what He has given it. — (Surah At-Talaq, 65:7)
Maintenance includes: food, clothing, medical care and housing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told Hind bint Utbah (may Allah be pleased with her): take what is sufficient for you and your children in a fair manner (Sahih al-Bukhari 5364). That is, "sufficient" is the basic principle.
كَفَى بِالْمَرْءِ إِثْمًا أَنْ يُضَيِّعَ مَنْ يَقُوتُ
It is sin enough for a man that he neglects those whom he is responsible for maintaining. — (Sunan Abi Dawud 1692)
Housing
أَسْكِنُوهُنَّ مِنْ حَيْثُ سَكَنتُم مِّن وُجْدِكُمْ
Lodge them (the wives) where you dwell, according to your means. — (Surah At-Talaq, 65:6)
The main considerations in housing: safety, privacy (a separate bedroom / kitchen / toilet) and an environment suited to the children. If a wife's privacy is infringed in a joint family at the in-laws', her demand for a separate arrangement is fair (Relations with in-laws).
A practical budgeting method
Adapt the following structure to your own income and expenses:
- Determine net lawful income — after all debts / obligatory expenses.
- Priority list: housing → food → medical care → education → clothing → emergency fund.
- Separate accounts for each household: a fixed monthly allocation for each household and an additional fund for urgent needs.
- Savings: build an emergency fund of at least three to six months of basic expenses.
- Annual expenses: advance preparation for Eid, education, medical care and rent increases.
- Review: reassess the budget every six months; if necessary discuss transparently with the wives.
Mistakes to avoid
- Running the household on interest-based loans.
- Cutting the first household's expenses because of the new one.
- Going beyond means with show-off spending or excessive gifts (Walimah and simple marriage).
- Neglecting the children's education and medical expenses.
- Leaving the mahr outstanding and forgetting it (Mahr).
The legal side
In Bangladesh the application for a second marriage mentions financial capacity and the reason for marriage; the Arbitration Council considers necessity. Be prepared (The legal process of plural marriage).
Advice for women
Before marriage find out: what will the housing be like, how will the monthly maintenance be fixed, how much will the mahr be and when, how will expenses be handled if a child is born. Keeping these matters clear in the Nikahnama and a written agreement reduces future disputes (Nikahnama, 10 questions if you want to become a second wife).
A sample budget structure (for the idea only)
Suppose your monthly net lawful income is 100 parts. A sample split (every household's needs differ, so this is only to show the structure):
- Emergency fund and savings: 10–15 parts
- The first household (housing, food, education, medical care): 35–40 parts
- The second household (the same kinds of heads): 30–35 parts
- Sadaqah / zakat and social obligations: 3–5 parts
- Own and miscellaneous expenses: the remainder
In practice the split will depend on the number of children, rent and health needs. The main lesson: write down the accounts and never reduce any household's minimum needs.
Real problems with housing
- Two separate homes are financially expensive; many keep separate flats in the same building or separate portions of the same house — this is possible if the wives' consent and privacy are ensured.
- Rent rises and moving: a long-term contract where possible, for stability.
- Own property: if property is given in a wife's name, check with a scholar whether it is consistent with justice among the children and the rules of inheritance.
Medical care, education and emergencies
Medical and education expenses are uncertain. So keep a separate fund and decide beforehand the principle of arrangement among the wives in case of a health crisis. Avoid interest-based loans or instalments; look for lawful alternatives (qard hasan, help from relatives).
What to do if income falls
- Tell all the wives and explain the situation honestly.
- Cut unnecessary expenses; keep basic needs intact.
- Look for ways to raise income — skills, a second income, help from relatives.
- It is improper to stop or neglect maintenance and say "I cannot afford it"; explain the situation and make a temporary understanding.
Some questions for women
Before marriage find out: how will monthly expenses be fixed? What will happen if income falls? How will I be assured about my child's education and medical expenses? Do not decide without clear answers to these questions (10 questions if you want to become a second wife).
Final word
For a man who is unable to take on financial responsibility, the Qur'an's instruction is that one wife is enough (The Islamic ruling on multiple marriages). For planning and advice, contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can two wives be kept in the same house?
They may not be kept in the same room without the wives' consent; for their privacy and safety there should be a separate room / portion. With both consenting and taking circumstances into account, they may be kept in separate portions of the same house.
How much should the maintenance be?
Fairness according to means and social standing is the main thing. Meeting basic needs (food, clothing, medical care, housing) is necessary, not luxury.
