Walimah and Simple Marriage: The Sunnah Method, Waste and Social Pressure
IMB Editorial Team · 5 October 2026 · about 4 min read
In our society marriage often means a function costing lakhs of taka, rounds of hospitality and social competition. Yet the teaching of the Sunnah is the opposite — marriage should be easy, blessed and bearable for everyone.
The Sunnah of the walimah
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him):
أَوْلِمْ وَلَوْ بِشَاةٍ
Hold a walimah, even if with a single sheep. — (Sahih al-Bukhari 5167; Sahih Muslim 1427)
From this we see that the walimah is according to means; it can be even less than a sheep. Many of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ walimahs were of dates, ghee, cheese or a little food. See also The marriage practice of the Companions.
Whom to invite
The worst food is the food of a walimah to which those who are willing are kept away and those who are unwilling are invited. — (Sahih Muslim 1432)
That is, leaving out poor neighbours and inviting only the rich and influential spoils the basic purpose of the walimah. Accepting an invitation when received is also commanded (Sahih al-Bukhari 5173; Sahih Muslim 1429), but if there are haram acts there (music, obscenity, forbidden forms of mixed gatherings), the Shariah ruling differs.
Publicising the marriage and the duff
The difference between the lawful and the unlawful is the duff and the announcement (in marriage). — (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1088; Sunan an-Nasa'i 3369)
That is, a public announcement of the marriage and limited joy are permitted. Beyond that, music, dancing, DJs or obscene arrangements are not in accordance with Shariah.
Waste and debt
Eat and drink, but do not waste. — (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:31)
Indeed the wasteful are brothers of the devils. — (Surah Al-Isra, 17:27)
Holding a wedding function by taking an interest-based loan is both waste and sin. Make a budget before the marriage and arrange "within what you have".
Practical advice for a simple marriage
- Hold one brief event combining the marriage and the walimah.
- Avoid extra spending on a pompous stage, lighting or photo sessions.
- Give up dowry, demands for gifts and the custom of return gifts (Dowry and the bride-price custom).
- Keep the mahr within means (Mahr).
- Consider a brief nikah arrangement at the mosque.
- Do not put the pressure of food expenses on the bride's family; the walimah is the groom's responsibility.
When marriage is hard, the path of sin gets easy
When wedding costs rise, many young men and women marry late or get involved in haram relationships. For this reason, the simple-marriage movement is part of society's moral protection. See Delayed marriage and how to avoid sin.
A simple plan for the walimah
- Guest list: relatives, neighbours, worshippers of the mosque, the poor and helpless — limited but widely representative.
- Food: ordinary but clean and lawful; cook in measured quantity to avoid waste.
- Time: a brief one-meal function is enough.
- Venue: the home, a hall adjoining the mosque or a medium-sized community space.
What to do if food is left over
Instead of throwing away surplus food, distribute it among neighbours, mosques / madrasas or the needy. This prevents waste and turns joy into social benefit.
Photos and videos, decoration and entertainment
In modern weddings the expenses of photos, stage and decoration have grown a lot. Within the limits of Shariah and means, choose simple decoration. Obscenity, transgression of Shariah limits in mixed gatherings and loud instruments / DJs should be avoided; a limited duff and announcement is permitted. Learn a scholar's view on specific matters.
No pressure on the bride's side
The walimah is the responsibility of the groom's side. Pressuring the bride's side for "hosting the wedding party", gifts or arrangements is against the Sunnah and a custom close to dowry (Dowry and the bride-price custom).
The walimah of a second marriage
The walimah of a second marriage is also part of the Sunnah, but maintain sensitivity towards the feelings of the first wife and family. In society a simple announcement and a small event are better, so that no message of show or competition goes out.
After the walimah
Keep a plan to repay quickly any loan taken for the arrangements. To reduce financial pressure in the months after the marriage, it is better to keep the walimah economical.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the walimah obligatory?
It is not obligatory, but it is a confirmed Sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah) for one who can afford it. It can be held at a convenient time after the marriage.
Whom should one invite to the walimah?
Relatives, neighbours, religious people and the poor — everyone. Inviting only the rich or influential is blameworthy.
