IMB Editorial Team · 5 October 2026 · about 4 min read
In today's society the average age of marriage has risen. Education, career, financial pressure, dowry and social expectations — all together, many young men and women are going through a difficult time with their faith and character. In this article, Islam's balanced guidance and practical advice.
The real causes of delay
- Huge wedding costs and show-off expectations (Walimah and simple marriage).
- Dowry demands (Dowry and the bride-price custom).
- Not having a job / income.
- Limits in finding a trusted bride or groom.
- Unreasonable thoughts about kufu (Kufu).
- Social discouragement of the remarriage of widows and divorced women (Widow marriage).
Islam's guidance
Sahih al-Bukhari 5066; Sahih Muslim 1400
The Qur'an says the same:
وَلْيَسْتَعْفِفِ الَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ نِكَاحًا حَتَّىٰ يُغْنِيَهُمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ
And let those who do not find the means to marry keep themselves chaste until Allah enriches them from His bounty. — (Surah An-Nur, 24:33)
What to do while waiting
- Fasting: voluntary fasts, especially on Mondays and Thursdays.
- Guarding the gaze: (Surah An-Nur 24:30) — stay away from obscene content, images and videos online; use filters and rules.
- Choosing company: avoid fitnah-laden gatherings or private relationships.
- Skills and earnings: build skills for lawful income, control debt and luxury.
- Du'a: make du'a for the good of marriage and a suitable partner.
- Let your guardian know: without shyness, tell your parents or a reliable elder.
The responsibility of guardians
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1084; Sunan Ibn Majah 1967
If good proposals are turned down for pointless conditions, pride of lineage and greed for wealth, fitnah increases. Ease and promptness in a child's marriage is the guardian's responsibility. See The role of the wali (guardian).
Ways to make the path to marriage easy
- A brief and economical event; a dowry-free marriage.
- Introductions through the mosque or a trusted institution.
- Respect and opportunity for previously married women and widows.
- Short counselling before marriage — responsibilities, rights, communication.
For those who have become involved in haram relationships
Do not despair. The door of repentance is open. Details: From a haram relationship to the path of a halal nikah.
Fitnah of the digital age and self-protection
Social media, chat apps and streaming have brought new fitnah for young men and women whose marriage is delayed. A few effective strategies:
- Filters and time limits: an obscenity filter on devices, keeping the phone away after a set time.
- Avoiding loneliness: not staying online alone for long periods at night.
- Positive alternatives: exercise, books, volunteering, da'wah work — keeping time meaningful.
- Good friends: the company of religious, supportive friends.
Protecting your own dignity
Not every relationship becomes lawful just because it comes under the name of "love". Closeness without a promise of marriage puts both self-respect and the Hereafter at risk. If you are a victim of deception (especially financial or blackmail), take legal and family help (Returning from a haram relationship).
Social reform: what society can do
- Mosque-based help: a list and verification system for young men and women who wish to marry.
- A social pledge for simple marriage: a collective decision against dowry and waste.
- Employment and skills training: creating income opportunities for young men.
- Encouraging the remarriage of widows and divorced women (Widow marriage).
How to handle the stress of delayed marriage
- Patience and trust in Allah — the partner decreed for you will come at the right time.
- No comparison with others.
- Rather than drowning in regret and despair, keep on with work, service and the pursuit of knowledge.
- If the stress grows, take the help of a trusted scholar or counsellor.
Small habits of becoming ready for marriage
A little time every day for Qur'an recitation, regular prayer, a debt-free life, care for health and cleanliness, and good conduct towards family members — these make you suitable for your future partner (Before marriage: a checklist).
