Some feel ashamed of their past, some are stuck in an ongoing haram relationship, some are afraid over photos or chats. This article is not to blame anyone; rather to show the way back — because Allah the Exalted has forbidden His servants to despair.

Do not despair of Allah's mercy

قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ

Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. — (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53)

التَّائِبُ مِنَ الذَّنْبِ كَمَنْ لَا ذَنْبَ لَهُ

The one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin. — (Sunan Ibn Majah 4250)

The first step: ending the relationship

The Qur'an's instruction is clear:

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا

And do not even approach fornication; indeed it is an obscenity and an evil way. — (Surah Al-Isra, 17:32)

The conditions of repentance are generally: abandoning the sin, remorse, and a firm resolve never to return. In practice this means — stopping private meetings, phone calls, chats and the exchange of photos / videos, and staying away from places of temptation. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade seclusion without a mahram (Sahih al-Bukhari 5233).

If you want to return to the halal path

  1. Repentance and restraint: first stop the unlawful side of the relationship.
  2. A proposal through the guardian: if the groom and bride are suitable, inform the family and make the proposal in the Shariah way (Marriage proposals and meeting).
  3. Verification: instead of emotion, check religiosity, character and sense of responsibility (Choosing a groom).
  4. Istikhara and consultation: (Istikhara).
  5. If it does not work out, patience: if the family or circumstances do not agree, look for the halal path elsewhere; do not go down the wrong path again under the pull of emotion.

In sensitive situations (such as pregnancy, a child)

In complicated situations like this, do not decide by yourself; be sure to consult a qualified and trusted mufti in confidence. Both sides must be taken into account — the Shariah ruling and legal protection.

Blackmail and online risks

  • If someone threatens you or demands money using personal photos / videos, do not be frightened into giving more information.
  • Keep screenshots and evidence.
  • Turn to a trusted guardian / elder and legal help.
  • Report and block the account concerned.

Keep sins private, return to Allah

It is improper to publicise your own or others' sins. Rather than being lonely, keep yourself busy with good company, regular prayer, Qur'an recitation and istighfar. If marriage is delayed, see what to do in Delayed marriage and how to avoid sin.

Practical obstacles in leaving a relationship

Leaving a haram relationship is often hard — because of emotion, habit, fear or dependence. A few practical ways:

  1. Close all channels of contact: block / mute the number, chats, social media.
  2. Delete old content: photos, chats and memories — whatever provokes.
  3. Change your environment: move away from familiar secluded places, times and habits.
  4. Fill your schedule: keep busy with prayer, Qur'an, exercise and work.
  5. The company of trusted people: the help of a trustworthy elder brother / sister, a scholar or a counsellor.

Handling guilt and despair

Shaytan often says, "There is no way back for you." This is a lie. The Qur'an and hadith repeatedly say not to despair and that the door of repentance is open. Ask Allah's forgiveness for the past, be careful in the future, and look ahead.

Responsibility towards the other party in the relationship

  • Tell them respectfully that you are leaving the haram path.
  • Do not threaten them, insult them or expose their photos / words.
  • If they wish to move on the halal path and are suitable, a proposal can come through the guardians (Proposals and meeting).

Safe alternatives for finding a halal partner

Look for a groom or bride through family, mosque-based help or a trusted marriage bureau. Remember that a good relationship begins with respect, honesty and limits (The pre-marriage checklist).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one marry that same person after leaving an unlawful relationship?

If the groom and bride are suitable, after repenting and ending the relationship, a Shariah proposal and marriage can be made through the guardians. If there is a specific complication (such as pregnancy), the advice of a qualified mufti is essential.

Must a sin be disclosed before marriage?

The general principle is to keep sins private; but if something affects health or family rights, take a scholar's advice and the necessary information should be conveyed.
