How to Handle Jealousy in a Co-Wife Household: Practical Advice for Both Wives and Husband
IMB Editorial Team · 5 October 2026 · about 4 min read
Jealousy is not unusual in a household of several wives. It existed even in the Prophet's household. The question is how we manage jealousy — so that, instead of destroying the relationship, it turns into a practice of self-restraint and patience.
An incident in the household of the Prophet ﷺ
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ was with one of his wives. When another wife sent a dish with food, the wife in whose house the Prophet ﷺ was struck the dish with her hand and threw it, and the dish broke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered the broken pieces, collected the food and said, "Your mother became jealous." Then he kept the dish from the house and sent the other one. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5225)
Three lessons in this incident: 1) he did not portray jealousy as a crime, but understood it as a human reaction; 2) he kept the expression of anger calm; 3) he resolved the wrong by making up the loss.
For wives: the way of handling jealousy
- Acknowledge the feeling: make it easy to say "I am hurt"; but not in anger or insult.
- Do not cause harm: refrain from lying about the co-wife, backbiting, intrigue or inciting the husband against her.
لَا تَسْأَلِ الْمَرْأَةُ طَلَاقَ أُخْتِهَا لِتَسْتَفْرِغَ صَحْفَتَهَا
No woman should ask for her (religious) sister's divorce so as to empty her plate (share) for herself. — (Sahih Muslim 1408; a similar narration is in Sahih al-Bukhari too)
- Purify the heart:
وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا
And do not put in our hearts any resentment towards those who believe. — (Surah Al-Hashr, 59:10)
- Use time well: use the time outside your turn for worship, learning, raising children and lawful work.
- Patience and trust: if unwanted thoughts grow, discuss with trusted elders.
For the husband: conduct that reduces jealousy
- Justice: equality in time, expenses and conduct (Justice between multiple wives).
- No comparison: do not praise or criticise one wife in front of another.
- Privacy: do not tell one wife the private matters of another.
- Transparency: be open about the schedule and financial arrangements.
- Empathy: give importance to the first wife's dignity and emotions (How to keep a good relationship with the first wife).
- The children's security: do not let the quarrels of the heart affect the children (Raising children in a multi-wife family).
The path of reconciliation
وَالصُّلْحُ خَيْرٌ
And reconciliation is better. — (Surah An-Nisa, 4:128)
If the conflict grows, take the mediation of a trusted elder or scholar (Marital disputes and arbitration).
What to do when jealousy goes beyond limits
If abuse, continuous insult, deprivation of maintenance or a fear of mental illness appears, do not cover the matter up by calling it "jealousy". There are Shariah and legal remedies (What a wife can do if the husband is not just).
Levels of jealousy: which is natural and which is harmful
- A natural feeling: concern, hurt and sulking about one's own dignity and the husband's time.
- Controllable jealousy: even with pain in the heart, restraint in conduct and courtesy in dialogue.
- Harmful jealousy: wishing harm on others, false accusations, evil whispers, using the children.
At the first two levels, self-restraint and du'a are enough; on reaching the third level, outside help (a scholar, counsellor, elder) is needed.
Small habits that reduce jealousy
- Time and interest for yourself — study, religious work, the company of a friend / relative.
- Minimal courteous contact with the co-wife; neither excessive closeness nor hostility is obligatory.
- Not thinking that your worth depends on the husband's attention.
- The practice of expressing thanks and gratitude, which keeps the heart steady.
The children's role in a co-wife household
Do not use the children against the co-wife. Words like "that mother is bad" pour poison into a child's mind and create future hatred among half-siblings (Raising children). Rather teach them: people have faults, yet good conduct and respect must be maintained.
For the husband: what to say and not say at times of jealousy
- Say: "I understand your feelings, I will protect your rights."
- Do not say: "I am like this with her, why should I be like this with you?", "I don't like this trouble."
- After the jealousy is expressed, listen calmly; if you don't know the solution, take time.
When to take outside help
When jealousy is affecting sleep, eating, worship or the care of the children, or permanent hostility is forming within the family and among the children — then the time for arbitration and professional counselling has come (arbitration).
