10 Practical Ways to Make Marriage Easy: Dowry, Mahr, Walimah and Process

IMB

Our second goal is a simple process (Our goal: Simple Process). Making marriage easy does not mean lowering standards; rather it means removing needless burdens and bringing back the real purpose of marriage — companionship, protection and blessing.

The principle of the Sunnah

أَعْظَمُ النِّكَاحِ بَرَكَةً أَيْسَرُهُ مَؤُونَةً

The most blessed marriage is the one whose expense is the easiest. — (Musnad Ahmad)

أَوْلِمْ وَلَوْ بِشَاةٍ

Hold a walimah, even if with a single sheep. — (Sahih al-Bukhari 5167; Sahih Muslim 1427)

Ten ways to make it easy

  1. Give up dowry entirely. There is no place for a price or demands in marriage; the groom's duty is the mahr and maintenance (Dowry and the bride-price custom).
  2. A mahr within means. Fix an amount you can pay; writing it to evade payment is wrong (Mahr).
  3. A brief nikah. Ijab-qabul, two witnesses and the khutbah, at the mosque or at home, are enough (The pillars of nikah).
  4. A simple walimah. A limited guest list, not leaving out poor neighbours, not wasting food (Walimah and simple marriage).
  5. No debt. Do not hold the function by taking an interest-based loan; arrange within what you have.
  6. Keep the guardian involved. A transparent proposal and open discussion reduce many complications (The role of the wali).
  7. Reduce unreasonable conditions. Religion and character instead of exaggerated demands about lineage, wealth and profession (Kufu).
  8. No pressure on the bride's side. Give up hosting the wedding party, lists of gifts and return gifts.
  9. A step-by-step process. Application → verification → introduction → proposal → nikah → registration; know in advance what is needed at which step.
  10. Correct registration. Read the Kabinnama, leave no column blank (The Nikahnama and registration).

Simple does not mean neglect

Even in a simple marriage three things can never be compromised: the wife's consent, a written mahr and a valid registration. These are the foundation of future rights and security.

The example of the Companions

Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Medina with nothing and, trusting in Allah, had a simple marriage; in the marriage of Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), faith was the mahr. How IMB helps

We have arranged the process from application to registration step by step, so applicants do not have to handle everything alone. For women the application and verification are always free.

A sample timeline for a simple marriage

  1. Introduction and verification: exchange of information through the guardians and enquiry from reliable sources.
  2. A Shariah meeting: a brief meeting in the presence of a mahram or guardian (Proposals and meeting).
  3. Istikhara and decision.
  4. Fixing the mahr and date: in writing, in a payable amount.
  5. Nikah: ijab-qabul, two witnesses and the khutbah.
  6. Registration: through a licensed Nikah Registrar.
  7. Walimah: according to means, including the poor and neighbours.

Where costs can be cut

  • Stage and decoration: a plain, clean arrangement instead of a pompous stage and lighting.
  • Photos and videos: keep them limited; avoid waste and crossing Shariah limits.
  • Number of guests: a small arrangement with those who are truly needed.
  • Food: cook in measured quantity; distribute leftover food among the poor.
  • Clothes and jewellery: within means; no competition.

Common objections and answers

"What will people say?" — Society's taunts are not a Shariah yardstick; following the Sunnah is the real honour.

"Everyone gives / takes dowry." — Prevalence does not make the haram lawful; the law too has prohibited dowry.

"Does simple marriage mean less love?" — No. Blessing and stability come from religiosity, honesty and mutual respect, not from the amount spent.

Guardians who can make marriage easy

Parents and walis play the main role in decisions. When demands are reduced, proposals are met with respect and the child's choice is given weight, many beautiful marriages happen easily (The role of the wali).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a simple marriage mean keeping the mahr low?

The mahr should be within means and payable; in the Hanafi view at least the equivalent of 10 dirhams of silver, with no upper limit. Writing an exaggerated amount and not paying it is wrong.

Must the bride's side bear the cost of hosting guests?

No. The walimah is the groom's responsibility. Pressure on the bride's side for food or gifts is against the Sunnah and a custom close to dowry.

Does simple marriage lower social status?

The yardstick of honour in Islam is taqwa (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:13). The Companions' marriages were simple yet exemplary.
