Does Surah An-Nisa 4:129 Prohibit Multiple Marriages? Answering a Misconception

"No matter how hard you try, you will not be able to be just between your wives" — quoting this part of verse 129 of Surah An-Nisa, some say: then plural marriage must be forbidden! Although the idea is popular, it does not match the full reading of the verse or the commentators' explanation. Let us see.
The full text of the verse
وَلَن تَسْتَطِيعُوا أَن تَعْدِلُوا بَيْنَ النِّسَاءِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتُمْ ۖ فَلَا تَمِيلُوا كُلَّ الْمَيْلِ فَتَذَرُوهَا كَالْمُعَلَّقَةِ ۚ وَإِن تُصْلِحُوا وَتَتَّقُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا
No matter how eager you are, you will never be able to keep (full) equality between your wives. So do not incline completely to one side, so that you leave the other as if hanging. And if you set things right and fear Allah, then indeed Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful. — (Surah An-Nisa, 4:129)
The first mistake: reading half the verse
Those who want to use the verse to prove plural marriage forbidden take the first sentence but skip the instruction that follows. The verse itself says — "do not incline completely". It is meaningless to command control over the degree of something that is entirely impossible. It is clear that the equality the verse calls impossible is a different thing, and the justice that is possible must be observed.
The second point: which justice is impossible?
The well-known explanation of the Companions and the Tabi'un is that what is called impossible here is full equality of the heart's inclination, love and emotion, because the leanings of the heart are not within a person's control. This explanation is recorded in Tafsir Ibn Kathir. So the justice made a condition in 4:3 is outward justice — time, maintenance, housing and conduct. And what is said in 4:129 to be beyond human capacity is equality of heartfelt inclination.
The third point: reconciling the two verses
| Verse | Subject | Responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| 4:3 | Outward justice | Obligatory, a condition |
| 4:129 | Full equality of the heart | Beyond capacity, so not required; but clear leaning to one side is forbidden |
Read this way, there is no contradiction. More detail: Justice between multiple wives.
The fourth proof: the practice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Companions
If 4:129 had prohibited plural marriage, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself and the Companions would not have kept their plural marriages after the verse was revealed. The first audience of the Qur'an understood the meaning of the verse better than we do; their conduct is sufficient explanation. See: The marriages of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and their wisdom.
Fifth: consensus and the position of the four madhhabs
All the well-known jurists of the four schools have said plural marriage up to four is permitted; where there is a fear of not being just, they have said it is disliked or close to forbidden. The view that completely cancels the permission was absent in the early period.
When should one refrain from plural marriage?
For someone who has a strong fear that he will not be able to keep outward justice, 4:3 is clear: one wife. That is, the verses call a person to self-assessment; they do not give everyone the same fatwa. For preparation see Conditions and rules of a second marriage.
The argument in summary
Those who want to prove plural marriage forbidden through 4:129 have an argument structured like this: (1) in 4:3 justice is a condition; (2) 4:129 says justice is impossible; (3) therefore plural marriage is unlawful. This argument is weak in at least four places:
- Assuming the word means the same thing: the "justice" of the two verses is not the same thing — one is outward conduct, the other is the heart's inclination.
- Ignoring the rest of the verse: the instruction "do not incline completely" proves that partial equality is possible and desired.
- The consistent teaching of the Qur'an: the accusation that in the same Qur'an one verse gives a permission and another cancels it is against the Qur'an's internal consistency.
- The practice of the first generation: even after the verse was revealed, the Companions' plural marriages continued.
The lesson of the "ka'l-mu'allaqah" simile
The "hanging woman" simile refers to a woman who is in her husband's household but does not receive the attention and rights due to a wife, and is not free either. The Qur'an counts this condition as injustice. From this, one important moral limit of plural marriage becomes clear — if you marry a second time, you cannot put the first wife in such a state. What it demands is ensuring proper time, maintenance and respect for the first wife (Keeping a good relationship with the first wife).
The claims of modern reformists and the scholars' reply
In the twentieth century some reformist writers offered interpretations combining the two verses so as to effectively prohibit plural marriage. Mainstream scholars and jurists did not accept this, because it conflicts with the practice of the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions and with the unanimous understanding of the Ummah over fourteen hundred years. But this debate brought forward the need to prevent the abuse of plural marriage in society; so legal regulation (the Arbitration Council) is acceptable to many scholars as an "administrative control" (legal process).
What a believer should do
Instead of making the verse an excuse or a tool of intimidation, take it as guidance for self-assessment: am I able to keep outward justice? If not, one wife is better. If able, the responsibility must be fulfilled strictly.
Conclusion
Verse 4:129 acknowledges human limitation, but it gives no licence to commit injustice. The permission of plural marriage remains, together with a heavy responsibility. To learn more, contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do 4:3 and 4:129 contradict each other?
No. 4:3 sets the condition of outward justice, while 4:129 says that full equality in the heart's inclination is beyond human capacity and forbids clear leaning to one side. The two verses complement each other.
Is the verse saying justice is impossible, so one wife only?
No. By saying 'fala tamilu kulla l-mayl' the verse commands us to guard what is within human capacity. Commands are not given for what is impossible.
